Cut out badges (also known as pierced badges, cutout badges, or badges with cut outs) feature intentional openings, holes, or removed sections within the design, creating negative space that adds depth, dimension, and visual interest to the badge.
The term “cut out” refers to the manufacturing process where portions of the metal base (typically brass or steel) are precisely removed—using die-cutting, laser cutting, or stamping—after the design is stamped or formed, rather than leaving the badge as a solid silhouette. This piercing allows for intricate shapes, openwork elements (like windows in logos, hollow letters, or artistic voids), or even transparent effects when combined with enamel or plating.
These badges maintain full structural integrity when properly designed (with adequate spacing between cutouts, usually at least 1.2mm to avoid fragility), resulting in a lightweight, elegant, and eye-catching appearance that stands out more than standard solid badges. Often used in custom enamel pins, lapel pins, or promotional badges, the cut outs enhance the overall aesthetic without altering the core production methods like enameling or plating.
